Charytin – The Superstar of Dominican Republic
Born on May 23, 1949 in Santo Domingo is a Dominican Republic superstar – a singer, actress and TV presenter all rolled into one – Charytín Goyco. Popularly known as Charytín, Goyco was born to a Dominican father and Spanish mother. When Charytins mother broke up with her father, she and her siblings were taken to Spain. Ten years after, they moved back to Dominican Republic when her parents reconciled.
In 1960, Charytin moved to Puerto Rico and met television producer and actor Elin Ortiz who became her husband. She started her career in Puerto Rico in 1970 with her own weekly TV show on WAPA-TV which lasted for 15 years. With her own song Mosquita Muerta that became a chart topper in various countries such as Argentina, Mexico, and Venezuela, Charytin became an international superstar who gave pride to Dominican flag. She gave birth to her first son in 1979 and named him Shalym, who is a unexpected actor that has appeared in Lizzie McGuire TV show.
In 1988, Charytin with her husband and son moved to Miami where she became pregnant. In 1990, she gave birth to twins, a girl and a boy. Charytin dedicated herself to raising her kids. She usually takes them along with her trip to Puerto Rico. At the later part of the 1990s, she came back to TV hosting by a Spanish shopping network in Miami. She started hosting her own gossip TV show in 2002 for Telefurtura – Escandalos de la Mediadia. Because of her contribution to Dominican Republic, she was awarded Art Critics Association of the Dominican Republic in 2007.
