Lakers: Brown Sidelined With Shoulder Ailment

Los Angeles Lakers center Kwame Brown is scheduled to be out of the game for a period of three to four weeks because of a bruised rotator cuff and bursitis in his right shoulder.

With this double injury, Brown will not be able to start the season with the Los Angeles Lakers and will not play the first four games at the minimum.

Lakers spokesman John Black announced on Thursday that Brown has been examined by a shoulder specialist, Dr. Neal Elattrache, on Wednesday. Following this examination the prognosis of a break of three to four weeks has been given.

Brown, 24, has not played any exhibition game since his collision with Andrew Bynum during practice on Saturday. Last season, he had been already bothered by his shoulder. The player was the No. 1 pick in the 2001 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards. He averaged 7.4 points and 6.6 rebounds in 72 games for the Lakers for his first season with the team last year. After Chris Mihm injured his right ankle on March 12th, he replaced him on the list and became the team’s starting center. As for Mihm, he played only one game after that and is nevertheless recovering from off-season ankle surgery.

The Lakers will open the season on Oct. 31st against the Phoenix Suns. But the team has to cope with a long list of injured players. With Brown and Mihm sidelined, the Lakers are likely to place the 18-year-old Bynum, Ronny Turiaf and Brian Cook at the center identify to start the season. Bynum was the team’s first-round draft selection last year and Turiaf was the second-round pick. But none of them played much as rookies. Besides Cook is a natural forward.
