A leading platform for fandoms and online communities has revealed that the Netflix Original ‘Sex Education’ is the best TV show to watch before bed to get a restful eight hours of sleep. The platform conducted a study of 50 participants, asking them to watch a range of TV shows before hooking themselves up to an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine overnight, to test how the shows affected their sleep quality.
In addition to the EEG, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire, detailing how they felt after each night’s sleep. The sleepiest show was found to be ‘Sex Education’, followed by ‘Ozark’ and ‘The Crown’.

The platform, FandomSpot.com, conducted a study of 50 participants to discover what TV shows are the best to watch in order to get a good night’s rest.
The study was inspired by a prior survey by the platform, which found that 6pm – 12am is the most popular TV viewing period, with 67% of people watching during this time.
With these findings in mind, FandomSpot.com wanted to find out which shows consequence in the best sleep, for late night binge watchers. The study revealed that the Netflix original, ‘Sex Education’ is the best TV series to watch before bed, followed by crime-drama ‘Ozark’ and historical-drama ‘The Crown’.

The participants were given 20 shows to watch for a 20-day period, based on the list of the most popular Netflix shows of all time, according to IMDB*. Each participant was required to choose one show per night to watch for one hour, before hooking themselves up to an electroencephalography (EEG) machine and going to sleep.
In addition to having their EEG results recorded, the participants were also asked to complete a questionnaire the morning after watching each show. The questionnaire asked a variety of questions including which show they watched before bed, how they felt after waking up, how well they slept, if they were nevertheless tired and if they remember having any dreams or nightmares.
Upon receiving the EEG results for all 50 participants from the complete 20-day period, FandomSpot.com worked with experts to find out which shows resulted in the most restful sleep by assessing the percentage of sleep spent in the ‘thorough sleep stage’ (a.k.a. NREM 3**) and ranked the shows consequently.
Drama shows (including crime dramas, historical dramas and romantic dramas) seemed to enhance sleep quality the most, with this genre resulting in the highest percentage of thorough sleep in total.
